Supplement
The expressions 「寝てくれました」(nete kuremashita, or “my child slept”), and「寝てくれませんでした」(nete kuremasen deshita, or “my child didn’t sleep”), contain the auxiliary verb "kureru", which is used to imply that someone has done you a favor or a kindness, and by using these expressions, the parent can indicate a feeling of gratefulness, or the sense that his/her child did not do something that he/she had hoped for. If a child goes to sleep earlier than usual, a parent can have more time for him/herself. On the other hand, if a child doesn’t sleep well, the parent will be sleep deprived. The parent may indicate his/her feeling of gratefulness or wistfulness with phrases such as 「~てくれました」(~(shi)te kuremashita), meaning “my child did me a favor (by doing something) / my child did me the kindness (of doing something)”, or「~てくれませんでした (~(shi)te kuremasen deshita), meaning “my child didn’t do me the kindness (of doing something) ”.
